I use this press to assemble the layers in my segmented work. The various sized 4 x 4's are to enable the screw to reach the glue up as it grows. I saw a picture in American Wooturner by of the press that Jim Rodgers uses. His has tenons in the top cross-piece and matching mortises at various heights in the "stiles" that allow the height to be adjusted without using another piece of wood (which I admit I have to fiddle with to get things lined up right). I like his design, and may use it on a remake of this press.
